Fix a domain that is not working

If a custom domain does not come up, the cause is almost always one of the DNS records. Start with what the dashboard already knows: open Domains, select DNS setup on the domain, and select Check now. The panel then shows which record is missing and a message saying what it found.

  • Ownership, Routing, Certificate, Live — the four steps. The first one that is not done is where it is stuck.
  • Each record shows Found, Not found yet or Waiting (not looked for yet). The CNAME is only looked for once the TXT record is found.
  • Not connected yet or Something needs attention — the message under the steps names the record and what was found instead.
  • In the table, hover a Needs attention status to read the same reason.

Compare your provider’s records with the panel: Type, Name and Value must match. Full name shows what each record should resolve as.

These are the cases under Not working? in the panel.

New records usually appear within minutes, but some providers take a few hours. OceanResume keeps checking in the background.

A CNAME cannot share its name with any other record. Delete any old A, AAAA, CNAME or forwarding record on that name, including a parked-page or default record your registrar added.

If the Name box already ends with your domain, typing the full name gives www.example.com.example.com. Type only the part before your domain — www, not www.example.com.

Records only count where your domain’s nameservers point. If the nameservers point to Cloudflare or your host, add the records there, not at the registrar.

example.com and www.example.com are separate domains. A root domain needs an ALIAS-type record. If your provider has none, connect www and forward the root to it.

A CAA record that lists only other certificate authorities blocks your certificate. Remove it, or add letsencrypt.org and pki.goog to it.

If your DNS is at Cloudflare, the CNAME works both proxied (orange cloud) and DNS only. The TXT record is always DNS only.

Status What to do
Pending DNS The TXT record is not found, or its value does not match. Check its name and paste the value again.
Connecting Ownership is confirmed. If the message names the CNAME or ALIAS record, fix that record; otherwise the certificate is being issued — wait.
Needs attention A domain that was working lost its TXT record, or the hostname was rejected. Read the reason, restore the record, and select Check now.
Live The domain works. If it still does not show your profile, see below.

A live domain is not taken offline by one failed check; it is checked again a few minutes later.

The domain is live but does not show your profile

Section titled “The domain is live but does not show your profile”
  • It is not mapped. In the Domains table, choose a profile in Mapped profile.
  • The profile is hidden or was never published. Open the profile, publish it and set it to Live. See Publish and go live.
  • You only connected one of the two names. example.com and www.example.com are separate domains. Connect the other name as a second domain, or forward it at your registrar.
  • It was mapped a moment ago. Mapping and primary-domain changes can take up to a minute.
  • “You’ve already added this domain.” It is already in your Domains table.
  • “This domain is already registered” — another account holds this hostname.
  • “That hostname belongs to OceanResume, not to you — enter a domain you own.” Addresses under OceanResume’s own domains cannot be added. For a name under oceanresume.app, use Claim subdomain; see Your free address and subdomains.
  • A message that the domain was removed a moment ago — wait a minute and add it again.

Select Contact support at the bottom of the DNS setup panel, or go to the support portal. See also Contact support and, for where the records page is at your provider, DNS steps by provider.
